Jury out on marine damage a year after Gulf oil spill: Not for me

The Gulf Spill: One Year Later, they say it is nearly back to normal "a 69 where it was a 70 before the disaster" That is BS! despite the lies of coming back it is dead as the fishing and shellfish industry need it and for many generations!

I keep listening to people in the seafood business down there say business is great eat the shellfish and come on down for a visit. They are great pitchmen to rebuild their industry and life style. I watched a special where they were rebuilding the oyster beds saying they are going to reseed and will be back better than ever. That is all great but I have to remember the millions of gallons of oil and dispersants used.

Most of that is still out and about somewhere albeit widely thinned out and dispersed. It just did not evaporate and much of the sea bottom is dead. I watched a special on CNN and some of the fishermen were saying they are thinking if leaving maybe going further south or to the east coast of Florida where people are not afraid to go fishing and eat the fish and shellfish so they can start a new life.

We keep being told the Gulf is almost back to where it was before the disaster and despite wishful thinking and feel good campaigns to get people back to rebuild the fishing and tourist industry there is no way this is true. I watched as one of the small boats showed us an example as they revved up the motor and churned up the water dredging up mass amounts of oil. It was terrible and that is going nowhere for generations.

There are 67 miles of coastline moderately or severely impacted. I was looking at thousands of acres of marshland that were totally dead and they said it would be open ocean in a year. That is not success. Nothing can live in the oil and dispersant which makes me ask about the oysters and other shellfish they are seeding. What about them? They will die once they get involved with the oil. Turtles birds dolphins and fish are still turning up dead daily!

As we have been saying for many months, the gulf is dead for fishing as they knew and need it.You know that mess is evaporating and will come down with the rain on crops and in drinking supplies. I wish they would stop their lying! This already is the nightmare scenario they are not talking about. We do not matter and instead of doing the right thing for the people and the gulf they are going to lie until once again the awful truth becomes undeniable and they will just act surprised. WTF?

The people in the Gulf might as well keep drilling for oil because their fishing is going to be dead for generations if we are around that long. Their lives are altered forever and they know it!

If you recall the interview with the biologist that Rachel Maddow did last year he said here is what happens: life in the marshlands will die. That will provide the food for the fish and other marine life. So he said you'll have a very good year with record catches. Then when the food source runs out everything will die. I think I'd take his word for it over some paid BP scientist as the guy had been studying the marsh areas for the last 30 years.

AMEN to that Jim! ... and Buenos Dias Amigo! ...

This is another crock of the usual of course that is fed ... I posted quite a bit on this incident as it went down ... including what I figured the scam's would be, which I was so accurate, I just wished I could be on my football and hockey betting as well! Geeeezz what a crock of shit! Especially when they marched the BP CEO Hayward to the Hill (Capitalism Hill) for the "drilling" ... what I called that if I recall was a bunch of millionaire's, marchinjg a bunch more millionaire's to the Hill for a tongue lashing ... Tony after some time off and yachting or whatever, was then told he will be working in Russia next to run BP there. And where in Hell mis that $20 billion that President Obama got BP to agree on giving to those folk's down there?!! that was agreed and passed on .. they even appointed some czar to overlook it! What is so nauseating here in Texas ... is the endless tele and radio commericial's of BP ... with modest income fisher's highlighting the commercial's talking about how BP isnt perfect, but their trying, and crying, etc, etc, ad nauseum ... then that f'n naseating soft emotionally charged piano music playing in the background. The Gulf is like f'n wasteland these dayz ... whether people realize it or not, and not much of a goddamn thing is getting done, and President Obama can have all the Gumbo Brunches he want's there ... I WONT.

Let me tell ya'll something, and I'm a die hard Texan who love's my coast and shrimp, etc ... I WONT EAT A GODDAMN THING THAT COME'S OUT OF THE BLOODY GULF!! Give me my shrimp farm raised in a state like California and I'm a happy man!

My daughter just had to go to New Orleans on business not ond back to assess the city for a bid to get a 3000+ convention ... not only she didnt eat a damn thing that came out of the Gulf or Gumbo, she said the poor town was let down also after Katrina ... water mark's still on the wall's (5 year's later or so?) that the stench of old rotting wood was all over (it's a very old city, and alot of wood used in structure's), even the maousoleum tour's were still down ... that's the so called recovered "New Orleans" ... we done more for f'n Baghdad than for our own cities! My daughter is such a nice person too, and truely felt so sorry for the folk's down there, especially trying to market Gulf seafood and such on top of it ... she said they rolled out the red carpet for her and her partner in that town, best hotel accomodation's and the work's, in hope's of trying to win the bid ... but she had to decline for a few more reason's too, and believe it or not, they didnt have even a venue for multi- pupose use that could even handle 3000 guest's, with the accomodation's that were required.

Good posting Guy ....

Yeah Demeur! Those marshes that are dying will also return to open water. We had a tanker spill here in Ma in the cape. 50 years later the bay looks good but is devoid of life except for some stunted fiddler crabs. They are stunted because they smell the oil just below the surface and can not hide as normal.

You know RC, I am so sick of the damn lying. Those people know they are screwed and are relocating to the east coast. Fish and shellfish stocks are way down but some are putting on a good face to try and get people back.

I wouldn't touch that shit. My son is back swimming there with my grandkids and I told him their health is on his head.

I won't make this long on Katrina just suffice to say nature was allowed to do what R's couldn't and that was clean out NOLA.

Here is a link to what I started right after Katrina: Here Kudos to your good hearted daughter!

Between BP and Tepco, I've pretty much given up on seafood for life.

Wease coming from Salem, Ma I grew up on the ocean and all seafood and it is great for you if not tainted but who the hell knows any more. Hope the chickens are doing well!

Thanx for the link to your post Katrina post Jim, interesting in a way, because I never thought of that I reckon, but that seem's to be the case across America as far as moving out poor folk's ... I think in Dallas now, there are equal poor folk's and neighborhood's in it's suburb's these dayz. Take one of Dallas' original Little Mexico's which would be the Pikes Park area just a tad north of downtown or North Oak Cliff (SW of downtown), they moved out alot of the poor folk's that were property owner's, and neighborhood's where folk's refused to move they used "eminent domain" fed laws, north of downtown they used it to expand the new uptown and midtown district's, and just basically built a bunch of office tower's and high rise apartment/ condo's, but they run around the half to million mark in price, etc .. a bunch of new high scale eateries and nightclub's basically ... their making big buck's off it, yet the State of Texas is in a $20 billion or so budget crisis and cutting teacher's, health programme's, AID's/ HIV help they want to slash too, etc ... you get the picture. But this is also happening in Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, etc, etc. Some of your largest suburb's here like Arlington (20 miles west of downtown Dallas or so) have very large poor poulation's now, and Arlington is pushing probably nearly 400,000 population these dayz.

BTW Jim ... I hope you dont tell me our goddamn chicken's are vgoing to get radioactive! I like my chicken man! Although right this minute I'm eating a big well done steak! :)

It really pesses you off RC you know? The poor and needy are placated until they can get away with screwing them and then saying gee I'm sorry.

Man, I just got one of my brothers off the phone, damn! No, I think you know wease, he hatches and raises his own (poultry was my major in high school) and he grows a lot of his own stuff. He does a pretty good job. That is all another story though. Take care!

Blogger just ate another comment. I know if Google's crap software is making me this angry, then there's someone with a shorter fuse, hunting down a Google employee for payback.

I'm just as mad at myself, because I know that Google's software is turning to crap.

Ypu, got eight chicks right now. Two are silver sebrights. I had five of those, but they escape and my wife's terrier took out three before I stopped her. the others a re mutts. Their daddy is a Blue / Buff Orpington

And yet, almost every day I see where another right wing Jonestown moron is still hawking "drill here, drill now."

I'm thinking the parents of these cretins must have huffed a bunch of gas fumes prior to copulating.

jmsjoin said...

Hi Samuel, welcome! Drives you shit house doesn't it? They blame Obama for the gas prices because he wants responsible drilling. A new well under Bush would just be making it to market. We get most of our oil from Canada the only reason for this is purposely driving it up to make Obama a one termer.

Weaseldog said...

The oil industry isn't drilling on most of their leases now.

And there is good reason.

1. Many of those leases wouldn't be profitable to drill.
2. With horizontal drilling and injection technology, they can tap fields more efficiently, and drill fewer holes in the same field.

I know it's a common meme that oil under the USA is infinite, but we passed our peak in the early 1970s. Drilling faster and faster can't raise production significantly.

But you can bet that we'll destroy our watersheds and last ecosystems, to get a few more years of production. Then we'll have poison water and no oil.
