When my grandparents came to this country, they were proud to be in America. They studied and learned to read, write and speak English. They generally kept their ethnic languages in the home or within the family circle, but they encouraged all to try the new language.

I agree with this thought myself but i'm smart enough to realize there are some too old or for whatever reason, incapable of this. what about them? The title of the above story I found very agreeable. Bush's stupid Idea! The story however, I found quite offensive. However, there is the link if?
Is English the "national" language or a "common and unifying" one? Two dozen senators say it's both. They voted for a pair of amendments on the language, as the Senate continued pushing toward a vote on a comprehensive immigration bill.
Senators passed a Republican measure that would make English the national language. Moments later, it approved a Democrat-led amendment declaring English a "common and unifying language."

They have me, a lifelong American totally confused. what the heck is the difference? Doe it matter only if you have a Repug or a Dem messing with you? If they can each pass their own version, why can't they do that with real important issues?
It seems as though under the guise of getting their way, politicians have once again purposely confused this issue as they have every other one under Bush so as to give them false importance and leave you the average American bewildered. Mission accomplished!
