I consider myself luckier than many not because of what I have but because of my lack of debt, my lack of need for any semblance of modern conveniences or comfort, and my ability to do without and grow my own food if I have to and largely live off the land. I am a survivalist but besides that I have had extensive training in growing my own vegetables, keeping them for the winter, raising livestock, butchering and preparing it, you name it! I only wish I did not allow my copious notes to be thrown away and hope the internet will continue to be available as an information source. However I can do without it but do not want to do without communicating with some of you as we go through this mess Bush has created. As I watch the Dollar deflate and health costs skyrocket along with everything else I wonder how much longer I am going to be able to drive the 200 miles to the VA for my appointments and drugs? Again, I will do without!

If all else fails the legal system can take the election out of everyones hands and elect who they think is right. I have been saying from the very beginning that every time the chief idiot declares success at the point of a gun Iraq falls a little deeper into the hell on earth he has created for them in Iraq with promises to spread it to Iran and the entire middle east before it encompasses the entire world and soon.

Admiral Fallon's release is the last step before multilateral attack on Iran with Israel. Though denied the proof is overwhelming!

Originally I thought Fallon's position in charge of middle east operations was in preparation to attacking Iran. However Fallon was against it when all was said and done. Admiral William Fallon, then President George W. Bush’s nominee to head the Central Command (CENTCOM), expressed strong opposition in February to an administration plan to increase the number of carrier strike groups in the Persian Gulf from two to three and vowed privately there would be no war against Iran as long as he was chief of CENTCOM, according to sources with access to his thinking. Well that was it for him!

According to Gates, Fallon resigned because the fall-out from the article on this Gates said Fallon told him: “The current embarrassing situation, public perception of differences between my views and administration policy, and the distraction this causes from the mission make this the right thing to do.” Gates said he approved Fallon’s request to retire with “reluctance and regret. I heard yesterday and I can no longer find it, that Gates was ignoring Fallon's phone calls and that makes sense. I do not want to discuss this but I do want to discuss the big picture.

Being in charge of CENTCOM he was the final stumbling Block to attacking Iran as was the original plan and reason for attacking Iraq to get into the middle east. Gates is against it but he doesn't matter! Could be around June but definitely it will happen before the election. Kind of suspicious isn’t it that the chief war monger and advocate of attacking Iran Cheney, will be there shortly supposedly to say how much we want peace, Yeah before we friggen attack!

The resignation of the top U.S. military commander for the Middle East is setting off alarms that the Bush administration is intent on using military force to stop Iran's moves toward gaining nuclear weapons. In announcing his sudden resignation today following a report on his views in Esquire, Adm. William Fallon didn't directly deny that he differs with President Bush over at least some aspects of the president's policy on Iran. For his part, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said it is "ridiculous" to think that the departure of Fallon -- whose Central Command has been working on contingency plans for strikes on Iran as well as overseeing Iraq -- signals that the United States is planning to go to war with Iran.

Fallon's resignation, ending a 41-year Navy career, has reignited the buzz of speculation over what the Bush administration intends to do given that its troubled, sluggish diplomatic effort has failed to slow Iran's nuclear advances. Those activities include the advancing process of uranium enrichment, a key step to producing the material necessary to fuel a bomb, though the Iranians assert the work is to produce nuclear fuel for civilian power reactors, not weapons.

Here are six developments that may have Iran as a common thread. And, if it comes to war, they may be seen as clues as to what was planned. None of them is conclusive, and each has a credible non-Iran related explanation:

1. Fallon's resignation: With the Army fully engaged in Iraq, much of the contingency planning for possible military action has fallen to the Navy, which has looked at the use of carrier-based warplanes and sea-launched missiles as the weapons to destroy Iran's air defenses and nuclear infrastructure. CENTCOM commands the U.S. naval forces in and near the Persian Gulf. In the aftermath of the problems with the Iraq war, there has been much discussion within the military that senior military officers should have resigned at the time when they disagreed with the White House.

2. Vice President Cheney's peace trip: Cheney, who is seen as a leading hawk on Iran, is going on what is described as a Mideast trip to try to give a boost to stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. But he has also scheduled two other stops: One, Oman, is a key military ally and logistics hub for military operations in the Persian Gulf. It also faces Iran across the narrow, vital Strait of Hormuz, the vulnerable oil transit chokepoint into and out of the Persian Gulf that Iran has threatened to blockade in the event of war. Cheney is also going to Saudi Arabia, whose support would be sought before any military action given its ability to increase oil supplies if Iran's oil is cut off. Back in March 2002, Cheney made a high-profile Mideast trip to Saudi Arabia and other nations that officials said at the time was about diplomacy toward Iraq and not war, which began a year later.

3. Israeli airstrike on Syria: Israel's airstrike deep in Syria last October was reported to have targeted a nuclear-related facility, but details have remained sketchy and some experts have been skeptical that Syria had a covert nuclear program. An alternative scenario floating in Israel and Lebanon is that the real purpose of the strike was to force Syria to switch on the targeting electronics for newly received Russian anti-aircraft defenses. The location of the strike is seen as on a likely flight path to Iran (also crossing the friendly Kurdish-controlled Northern Iraq), and knowing the electronic signatures of the defensive systems is necessary to reduce the risks for warplanes heading to targets in Iran.

4. Warships off Lebanon: Two U.S. warships took up positions off Lebanon earlier this month, replacing the USS Cole. The deployment was said to signal U.S. concern over the political stalemate in Lebanon and the influence of Syria in that country. But the United States also would want its warships in the eastern Mediterranean in the event of military action against Iran to keep Iranian ally Syria in check and to help provide air cover to Israel against Iranian missile reprisals. One of the newly deployed ships, the USS Ross, is an Aegis guided missile destroyer, a top system for defense against air attacks.

5. Israeli comments: Israeli President Shimon Peres said earlier this month that Israel will not consider unilateral action to stop Iran from getting a nuclear bomb. In the past, though, Israeli officials have quite consistently said they were prepared to act alone -- if that becomes necessary -- to ensure that Iran does not cross a nuclear weapons threshold. Was Peres speaking for himself, or has President Bush given the Israelis an assurance that they won't have to act alone?

6.Israel's war with Hezbollah: While this seems a bit old, Israel's July 2006 war in Lebanon against Iranian-backed Hezbollah forces was seen at the time as a step that Israel would want to take if it anticipated a clash with Iran. The radical Shiite group is seen not only as a threat on it own but also as a possible Iranian surrogate force in the event of war with Iran. So it was important for Israel to push Hezbollah forces back from their positions on Lebanon's border with Israel and to do enough damage to Hezbollah's Iranian-supplied arsenals to reduce its capabilities. Since then, Hezbollah has been able to rearm, though a United Nations force polices a border area buffer zone in southern Lebanon.

Defense Secretary Gates said that Fallon, 63, asked for permission to retire. Gates said that the decision, effective March 31, was entirely Fallon's and that Gates believed it was "the right thing to do." In Esquire, an article on Fallon portrayed him as opposed to President Bush's Iran policy and said he was a lone voice against taking military action to stop the Iranian nuclear program. In his statement, Fallon said he agreed with the president's "policy objectives" but was silent on whether he opposed aspects of the president's plans. "Recent press reports suggesting a disconnect between my views and the president's policy objectives have become a distraction at a critical time and hamper efforts in the CENTCOM region," Fallon, said in the statement issued by CENTCOM headquarters in Tampa, Fla. "And although I don't believe there have ever been any differences about the objectives of our policy in the Central Command area of responsibility, the simple perception that there is makes it difficult for me to effectively serve America's interests there," he said. Gates announced that Fallon's top deputy, Army Lt. Gen. Martin Dempsey, will take over temporarily when Fallon leaves. A permanent successor, requiring nomination by the president and confirmation by the Senate, might not be designated in the near term. Attacking Iran is a given

President Bush on Tuesday opened his latest drive to shore up support for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, emphasizing the stakes in battles that, he said, pit the United States and its allies against a remorseless enemy with little regard for human life. Over the next several months, Bush must decide how many troops in the two major theaters of U.S. military operations to leave his successor, a decision that could influence the fall elections and help shape his legacy. On Iraq, Bush indicated Tuesday, he will be guided solely by his determination of the troop strength necessary to maintain stability.

"The politics of 2008 is not going to enter into my calculation. It is the peace of the years to come that will enter into my calculation," Bush told a friendly audience of religious radio and television broadcasters. White House aides described Tuesday's speech as the first of several in the next few weeks aimed at building support for the decisions Bush will make. Hmm! This really sickens me primarily because as usual the truth is all too obvious even though we are lied to in order to hide the truth. The end of an era in the middle east and Bush is responsible for its worsening death throes as he sends in Cheney the destroyer!

Just over two centuries since Napoleon's arrival in Egypt heralded the advent of the modern Middle East -- some 80 years after the demise of the Ottoman Empire, 50 years after the end of colonialism, and less than 20 years after the end of the Cold War -- the American era in the Middle East, the fourth in the region's modern history, has ended. Visions of a new, Europe-like region -- peaceful, prosperous, democratic -- will not be realized. Much more likely is the emergence of a new Middle East that will cause great harm to itself, the United States, and the world. The beginning of "new world order" All the eras have been defined by the interplay of contending forces, both internal and external to the region. What has varied is the balance between these influences. The Middle East's next era promises to be one in which outside actors have a relatively modest impact and local forces enjoy the upper hand -- and in which the local actors gaining power are radicals committed to changing the status quo. Shaping the new Middle East from the outside will be exceedingly difficult, but it -- along with managing a dynamic Asia -- will be the primary challenge of U.S. foreign policy for decades to come.

The modern Middle East was born in the late eighteenth century. For some historians, the signal event was the 1774 signing of the treaty that ended the war between the Ottoman Empire and Russia; a stronger case can be made for the importance of Napoleon's relatively easy entry into Egypt in 1798, which showed Europeans that the region was ripe for conquest and prompted Arab and Muslim intellectuals to ask -- as many continue to do today -- why their civilization had fallen so far behind that of Christian Europe. Ottoman decline combined with European penetration into the region gave rise to the "Eastern Question," regarding how to deal with the effects of the decline of the Ottoman Empire, which various parties have tried to answer to their own advantage ever since. The first era ended with World War I, the demise of the Ottoman Empire, the rise of the Turkish republic, and the division of the spoils of war among the European victors. What ensued was an age of colonial rule, dominated by France and the United Kingdom. This second era ended some four decades later, after another world war had drained the Europeans of much of their strength, Arab nationalism had risen, and the two superpowers had begun to lock horns. "[He] who rules the Near East rules the world; and he who has interests in the world is bound to concern himself with the Near East," wrote the historian Albert Hourani, who correctly saw the 1956 Suez crisis as marking the end of the colonial era and the beginning of the Cold War era in the region.

During the Cold War, as had been the case previously, outside forces played a dominant role in the Middle East. But the very nature of U.S.-Soviet competition gave local states considerable room to maneuver. The high-water mark of the era was the October 1973 war, which the United States and the Soviet Union essentially stopped at a stalemate, paving the way for ambitious diplomacy, including the Egyptian-Israeli peace accord. Yet it would be a mistake to see this third era simply as a time of well-managed great-power competition. The June 1967 war forever changed the balance of power in the Middle East. The use of oil as an economic and political weapon in 1973 highlighted U.S. and international vulnerability to supply shortages and price hikes. And the Cold War's balancing act created a context in which local forces in the Middle East had significant autonomy to pursue their own agendas. The 1979 revolution in Iran, which brought down one of the pillars of U.S. policy in the region, showed that outsiders could not control local events. Arab states resisted U.S. attempts to persuade them to join anti-Soviet projects. Israel's 1982 occupation of Lebanon spawned Hezbollah. And the Iran-Iraq War consumed those two countries for a decade.

The end of the Cold War and the demise of the Soviet Union brought about a fourth era in the region's history, during which the United States enjoyed unprecedented influence and freedom to act. Dominant features of this American era were the U.S.-led liberation of Kuwait, the long-term stationing of U.S. ground and air forces on the Arabian Peninsula, and an active diplomatic interest in trying to solve the Arab-Israeli conflict once and for all (which culminated in the Clinton administration's intense but ultimately unsuccessful effort at Camp David). More than any other, this period exemplified what is now thought of as the "old Middle East." The region was defined by an aggressive but frustrated Iraq, a radical but divided and relatively weak Iran, Israel as the region's most powerful state and sole nuclear power, fluctuating oil prices, top-heavy Arab regimes that repressed their peoples, uneasy coexistence between Israel and both the Palestinians and the Arabs, and, more generally, American primacy. A Palestinian official said Sunday that Israel's plan to expand settlements in the West Bank was "like putting a stick in the wheels of the peace process." Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert approved the construction of 330 housing units in Givat Zeev, near Jerusalem. Olmert spokesman Mark Regev said the decision was initially made nine years ago, and approved Sunday "for economic reasons that have to do with the developers." Israel will expand as Palestine vows to fight it.

Meanwhile Two suicide bombers exploded a car Tuesday at a building containing the offices of Pakistan's national investigative agency, destroying it and killing and wounding people inside. Police said 17 people died and 175 were wounded in the attack in Lahore, and three more were killed in a separate suicide bombing in an area of the city known as Model Town. All three bombers died. Lahore police describe the building, where about 1,000 people work, as destroyed.Pakistan's violence continues

Iranian students are offering rewards totaling a million dollars for the execution of three top Israeli military officers over the deadly strikes on Gaza, and they are encouraging fellow Iranians to donate their kidneys to raise the funds, the student news agency ISNA reported on Monday. To further inflame the situation US President George W Bush says he is sending Vice-President Dick Cheney to the Middle East next week. Mr. Bush said one of the reasons for the visit was to impress upon the Israelis and Palestinians the need to keep firm promises made on the peace process. "His goal is to reassure people the US is committed to a vision of peace in the Middle East," Mr. Bush said. Mr. Cheney's trip, which begins on Sunday, will take in Israel, the West Bank, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Cheney the war monger to visit and make everything worse

As you know Kosovo's parliament voted for independence on 17 February. More than 20 countries have recognised it so far, including the US, Britain, France, Germany and Turkey. But Serbia and Kosovo's minority Serbs are vehemently against it - and they have the support of Russia and China. Russia fears that recognition of Kosovo could open a "Pandora's box" of independence claims - and points to unresolved conflicts in the former Soviet Union. Ignoring world collapse look at the facts in Iraq, how can McCain run on success as it continues to collapse and Bush wants us there indefinitely?

Even by the horrendous standard of destruction Bush has set in the US and around the world the news this morning was particularly sobering. With accusations from Russia that Bush is trying to replace the UN with NATO. Also in an effort to preserve Kosovo as part of Serbia the Serb PM dissolved the Government. While anti Musharraf parties vote to form a new Government. Not to speak of Israel, Palestine, Iran, Africa, Indonesia, China and Taiwan. As McCain promises to continue this mess and the great success in Iraq I just want to highlight this great success in Iraq and I have to wonder how is it that no one is able to refute the success idiocy he is running on? We must get the facts out and the facts on Iraq alone will sink him.

As Bush is running out of legal time his destruction is on such a fast track we can not cover it or keep up with it let alone have the time to focus on a problem before another one replaces it as the current crisis but let me focus on the stories today highlighting the growing failure in Iraq! While McCain brags of success in Iraq while warning that Democrats will not continue it the facts prove he's a liar and an Iraq war Vet correctly warns of the war monger McCain!

Roger Martinez, who served as an Army ranger in Afghanistan and Iraq, noted in the Democrats' weekly radio address that President Bush endorsed McCain this week. Bush said McCain "won't flinch in the face of danger" and McCain strongly supports the U.S. efforts in Iraq. Electing a leader who would continue Bush's policies in Iraq would be a mistake, Martinez said. "Our country and our armed services cannot afford another leader like President Bush who would keep our overstretched military in Iraq for 100 years while ignoring the other threats our country faces both at home and around the world." McCain has said that U.S. troops could be in Iraq for many years if those troops were no longer being injured or killed. "I honor and thank John McCain for his years of military service to our country," said Martinez, who is studying at the University of Texas at San Antonio. "But I don't think he offers the right leadership on Iraq or understands how to reinvigorate our economy here at home."

* Martinez said U.S. troops are fighting bravely, "but no matter what they do they cannot solve the political problems in Iraq." The next commander in chief needs to promise to make the fight against al-Qaida in Afghanistan a greater priority than the war in Iraq, Martinez said.McCain has acknowledged that he must convince voters of the wisdom of defense of the Iraq war, and the increase of troops that has improved conditions there. The Arizona senator has said that both leading Democrats in the presidential race want to abandon Iraq to al-Qaida. Martinez said McCain also is out of touch with families like his own. "He says the economy is strong but how can he not see that families like mine are struggling to pay for out-of-control health care costs, home heating bills, gasoline and college tuition," Martinez said.
Warnings on McCain from Iraq war Veteran

There is no wisdom of staying in Iraq. Doing so will change nothing at home and would only ensure keeping us in the middle east until an excuse is found to spread this new world order Forever War! The U.S. military said on Sunday a recent increase in bombings was not the start of a wider trend in Iraq and violence had decreased overall. U.S. military spokesman Rear Admiral Greg Smith said he did not think recent security gains were being reversed. "I would not look at the last few weeks as an increase or a trend, but there has been a sporadic series of events that ... have resulted in significant loss of life," Smith told a news conference. Smith said the spate of recent attacks needed to be compared with a year ago, when thousands of civilians were dying in sectarian violence between majority Shiites and minority Sunni Arabs, with U.S. troops also suffering heavy casualties. This is success?

This guy must be a Republican for McCain. Don't compare it to Bush's created violence compare it to peace! Speaking of peace who is stealing the oil and the oil money? Carl Levin, D-Michigan, and John Warner, R-Virginia, said in their Friday letter to the Government Accountability Office that Iraq has "tremendous resources" in banks worldwide but is doing little to improve security and reconstruction efforts. Iraqi officials did not immediately respond to the senators' allegations. "We believe that it has been overwhelmingly U.S. taxpayer money that has funded Iraq reconstruction over the last five years, despite Iraq earning billions of dollars in oil revenue over that time period that have ended up in non-Iraqi banks," wrote the senators, who are their party's top members on the Armed Services Committee.

The senators cited testimony of then-Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz who told a House subcommittee in March 2003 that the U.S. would not foot the entire bill for rebuilding Iraq. Wolfowitz predicted then that Iraq's oil revenues could reach between $50 billion and $100 billion in the next two or three years. "We are dealing with a country that can really finance its own reconstruction and relatively soon," Wolfowitz said in 2003.

Using numbers from the U.S. State Department and Iraqi Oil Ministry, the senators said Iraq hopes to produce 2.2 million barrels of oil a day this year. Weekly averages suggest that the number has climbed as high as 2.51 million barrels a day. That kind of oil production could earn Iraq a projected $56.4 billion this year, an estimate the senators say is low given the rising cost of crude. "In essence, we believe that Iraq will accrue at least $100.0 billion in oil revenues in 2007 and 2008," the letter said. It added, "Our conversations with both Iraqis and Americans during our frequent visits to Iraq, as well as official government and unofficial media reports, have convinced us that the Iraqi government is not doing nearly enough to provide essential services and improve the quality of life of its citizens." Where is Iraq's oil money?

Better production then than the overly optimistic predictions and where the hell is the money! Oil is energy isn't it? Hugh Sykes BBC News, Baghdad: I am writing this looking at a smart color graph that has been sent to the BBC bureau in Baghdad by the US Department of State. It is part of what they call the Weekly Essential Indicators report. The graph shows the demand for electricity across the country compared with the supply. Over the past year, supply has never even got near meeting the demand. Seventy per cent was the very best, but that was exceptional and coincided with the autumn, when the weather is warm and pleasant here and people use their air conditioners and fans less than they do in the searing heat of the summer. And, they have not yet switched on their heaters for the cold desert nights of winter.

On the graph, the supply line mostly hovers around 55% and dips below 50 several times. That is for the whole country and supply to Baghdad is pitiful. Hours and hours go by without mains electricity, then it suddenly will be available for a short time and go dead again. If they can afford to, Iraqis buy generators and the fuel for them. There are massive machines in back gardens roaring almost incessantly. I keep saying the chief idiot has given me something different to worry about with my sons being in his wars now that he is telling the so called terrorists it is okay to waterboard and torture if they follow the chief idiots directions! President George W. Bush said Saturday he vetoed legislation that would ban the CIA from using harsh interrogation methods such as waterboarding to break suspected terrorists because it would end practices that have prevented attacks.

"The bill Congress sent me would take away one of the most valuable tools in the war on terror," Bush said in his weekly radio address taped for broadcast Saturday. "So today I vetoed it," Bush said. The bill provides guidelines for intelligence activities for the year and includes the interrogation requirement. It passed the House in December and the Senate last month. "This is no time for Congress to abandon practices that have a proven track record of keeping America safe," the president said. Supporters of the legislation say it would preserve the United States' ability to collect critical intelligence and raise the country's moral standing abroad.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Congress would work to override Bush's veto next week. "In the final analysis, our ability to lead the world will depend not only on our military might, but on our moral authority," said Pelosi, a California Democrat. But based on the margin of passage in each chamber, it would be difficult for the Democratic-controlled Congress to turn back the veto. It takes a two-thirds majority, and the House vote was 222-199 and the Senate's was 51-45. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Bush often warns against ignoring the advice of U.S. commanders on the ground in Iraq. Yet the president has rejected the Army Field Manual, which recognizes that harsh interrogation tactics elicit unreliable information, said Reid, a Nevada Democrat.

With a fifth of soldiers at risk for PTSD because of Bush's forever War the timely declining job job market will keep military victims coming!

As I watch the situation in South America erode as I knew it would along with Georgia, Russian, Serbian tensions, Palestine and Israel, Turkey and Iraq, Iraq Blowing again, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan worsening, all thanks to Bush, as you see him endorsing McCain to keep this mess going, I have to discuss the worsening job market which will ensure a new supply of soldiers to be damaged in Bush's Forever War!

First a little personal experience on both these fronts. My son who is EOD and has experience multiple deployments and will be going back to Iraq in about a week was just here and I am a bit concerned with his mental stability. It isn't just multiple wars these kids have to worry about! He is sounding pretty stressed to me but Jim was telling me a Doctor was reviewing him and thinking he was suffering from PTSD made him go see a specialist. Having a discussion with the specialist brought to light the fact that Jim went from Germany to Korea then his wife had a baby, with no break a tour in Afghanistan, another baby, problems developing with his wife, and a four year old who doesn't know or like him. Continuing wars that will only grow is almost the least of these kids worries! The specialist having problems with his own 4 year old sympathized with Jim who is also trying to keep his EOD company in order and signed him off as being okay. So Jim has earned the "right" to go back to combat in Iraq next week. Meanwhile tomorrow he takes his younger brother down to the Army recruiter tomorrow as he wants to join the Army as a Combat Engineer because he can not find a job. We all know what that means!

Anyway! After More than five years of recycling soldiers through Iraq and Afghanistan's battlefields is creating record levels of mental health problems, as about three in 10 GIs on their third tour admit emotional illnesses, according to an Army study released Thursday. Soldiers in combat suffering emotional issues and who saw friends killed were twice as likely to abuse civilians by kicking or hitting them, or destroying their property, the study shows. Half of those soldiers admitted unethical conduct compared with a quarter of all other soldiers in combat. From 15% to 20% of all soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan show signs of depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), says the study of almost 2,300 soldiers finished last fall. That rate jumps to about 30% for soldiers who have been on three or four combat deployments.
"Mental health problems are just one of the cascading costs we're seeing after a five-year war," said Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., who leads a Senate subcommittee on military personnel.

"Psychological wounds affect families, both emotionally and financially, just as much as physical wounds." The report underscores concerns raised by military leaders that the current year-long break soldiers receive between successive 12- to 15-month combat deployments is far too short for them to recover. In fact, certain mental illnesses such as PTSD grow more intense as the soldiers prepare to go back into combat, the report shows. "People aren't designed to be exposed to the horrors of combat repeatedly. And it wears on them," Gen. George Casey, Army chief of staff, told reporters last month, adding that breaks between must be lengthened. The report also showed the mental health issues for troops in Afghanistan have equaled those for soldiers in Iraq. U.S. forces ousted the Taliban in 2001, and fighting against Afghanistan's Taliban rebels has increased over the past three years.

Soldiers are more willing to seek mental health care, the study shows. However, some soldiers in remote parts of Iraq and Afghanistan told the survey they had difficulty accessing such care. Maj. Gen. Gale Pollock, a deputy surgeon general, said the Army is trying to get more counselors to remote areas. One possibility, she said, is deploying civilian mental health workers into combat areas for the first time. PTSD increasing

"We've clearly had a broad weakening in the labor market," Hall testified. "This weakening in the labor market is not a sudden thing, it has been happening for over a year." Rep. Elijah Cummings, who was chairing the hearing of Joint Economic Committee, suggested that Congress needed to do more to address the problems of unemployment. Some proposals: extended unemployment benefits and increased food stamps, as well as greater investment in infrastructure. "Frankly I believe our economy stands poised on an uncertain cliff, threatening to throw our nation into a crisis," said Cummings. Oil prices rose again Thursday, extending their record-setting gains as new economic reports and a decision by central banks in Europe to hold interest rates steady sent the dollar to a new low against the euro. While retailer reports on same-store sales were mixed, home foreclosures jumped in the fourth quarter to an all-time high, according to The Mortgage Bankers Association. The European Central Bank and Bank of England, meanwhile, decided to leave interest rates unchanged.

Analysts believe the steadily weakening dollar is the reason oil prices have jumped to a number of new inflation-adjusted record highs this week. Crude futures offer a hedge against a falling dollar, and oil futures bought and sold in dollars are more attractive to foreign investors when the dollar is falling. "This market continues to be based on the dollar," said James Cordier, founder of Option Sellers.com, a Tampa, Fla., trading firm. Light, sweet crude for April delivery rose 93 cents to $105.45 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after earlier spiking to a new record of $105.97.

At the pump, meanwhile, gas prices extended their advance toward record levels. The national average price of a gallon of gas rose 0.7 cent overnight to $3.185, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.
