I heard it mentioned by an advocate for legalization that we have to legalize them because many of our economies would collapse without them as they do jobs we do not want. Listen to these never heard little tidbits.
I would have to say that I agree with him in one industry only and that is farming. More specifically the maintaining and picking of crops and fruits. If fair wages are being paid in the hotel/service industry I would think that there are many jobs students and others would be happy to fill. If wages are not fair then my thought is a major valid concern and would be vastly worsened by legalization.
I propose that regardless of what the senate settles on, legalizing illegal immigrants in whatever capacity will backfire and certain industries would collapse as a result, regardless.
The only remedy will be to remember necessity is the mother of invention and crop and fruit farmers will adapt new methods of raising, caring for, and harvesting crops. Remember Eli whitney and the cotton gin? Where there is a will there is a way.
You will correct me if I am wrong, but once these 7, 11,12 million illegals become legal citizens then they are no longer cheap labor. We would then be right back where we were. I don't know if they are paid a fair wage as illegals but they would have to be as legal citizens. There goes the argument for farm owners because these people would now have to be paid minimum wage and be insured.
So these industries would fail, legalization or not. We need to find a way around the use of vast manual labor in this instance, agriculture. There must be a way to mechanize the labor they currently perform atleast in agriculture where they are used extensively. Having grown up farming and worked many farms including managing I enjoyed the work but know like digging clams for a living it can be hard work and most people don't seem to want to do it.
To me the only unbiased answer to this "problem" long ignored by both sides is to:
Secure, Secure Secure, the borders, and not with those stupid useless walls. If Illegal immigrants are here they are here. If they want to stay here and fill a necessary niche fine, work and send money home to your families. If you want to go home fine, you know where the door is.
I only care about the fair treatment of everyone regardless of financial standing or political party. However, If we were to legalize millions of illegals we would now have millions more legal low wage earners with no jobs since bush thinks it's fine to ship manufacturing and jobs overseas and creating a high tech new societal order when we are not educating our own population to fill those jobs so we must get them from overseas creating a squeeze from both sides.
* The immigration issue will be utter failure because now we would need more illegal aliens will be needed if things were status quo, again the bill to be paid by future taxpayers.
