Nuclear nonproliferation an honest Governmental goal? Hardly

I did a story a couple months back about tests that were conducted years ago at White Sands putting soldiers right next to ground zero to test a new kind of nuclear bomb with no fall out and it worked. Here it is!

Not only was I selected to take part, but I was put in charge of the entire 4th Army contingent, a group of two hundred and fifty officers and enlisted men drawn from posts throughout the Southwest. I knew one man slightly. The rest were strangers.

Our group assembled at Fort Bliss and began a two-day train ride to Las Vegas, Nevada, about an hour’s drive from the test site. During the trip I established a simple organizational structure, placing each of five lieutenants in charge of about fifty people. Together we prepared a handwritten list of the participants. Our morale was high.

We all looked forward to a unique military experience as well as a chance to do a little gambling. Our train arrived in Las Vegas so late that it became apparent we would have no supper that evening. However, a call to Camp Desert Rock, the tent city at the Nevada test site where we would sleep during our planned three-day stay, brought assurances that hot coffee and doughnuts would be waiting for us when we arrived around midnight. It was not. Nor had our group been assigned particular tents.

We were instructed to find cots wherever we could until more permanent arrangements could be made the following day. That plan might well have worked if one of the most violent storms in recent Nevada history had not struck at about three o’clock in the morning. It blew away every tent in Camp Desert Rock, soaking everyone and their personal belongings. Our personnel list disappeared.

I found I was responsible for two hundred and fifty wet, hungry, disgruntled soldiers whose names I didn’t know and who were scattered throughout the countryside. A noontime breakfast got everyone back together, and by evening a modicum of order had been restored—just in time for everyone to board buses for the big city.

The return buses left Las Vegas at 1:00 A.M. and arrived at camp an hour later. At 4:00 A.M. we were awakened for a dry run of the test. We boarded buses and drove for about an hour into the desert, where a series of trenches about eight feet deep awaited us. We climbed in, crouched for about an hour, and then returned to Camp Desert Rock, arriving about 8:00 A.M. We had the rest of the day to enjoy the 118-degree temperature in open tents in the middle of the desert. Little did we know this would be our normal routine for the coming week.

The test, called Apple II, was scheduled for the day following the dry run. However, after we settled in our trenches, wind conditions were pronounced unfavorable and the test was postponed. This sequence was repeated on the next five mornings. By this time only a few had money left to go to Las Vegas.

However, those who did learned that each evening a light on one of the buildings downtown indicated to the local populace whether there would be a test the next day. A blue light meant no test; a red light meant there would be one. Apparently our superiors hadn’t bothered to check the light each evening. On our seventh morning we learned that the light had been red the previous night, so we felt confident that this would be the real thing.

Our trenches were just over a mile from ground zero, the point immediately below the nuclear device. (No one ever used the term bomb.) We were told that the test device was roughly the same size as the bombs dropped on Japan and was located in a tower several hundred feet above the ground. We were also told there would be a bright flash, followed by a wave of heat. Next would come the ground shock. Finally there would be a rush of air as the blast wave passed over us.

At that point we would be able to leave the trenches and walk up to an area near ground zero where we could see the effect of the explosion on various types of military equipment. Since I knew that the blast wave would travel at the speed of sound (eleven hundred feet per second), I calculated that it would hit the trenches about six seconds after the explosion.

If I allowed a second for the blast to pass and an extra second’s margin, it would be safe to stand eight seconds after the initial flash. This meant that if I counted carefully, I would be able to view the fireball much sooner than my colleagues, who would be waiting for the official word to stand up. As the time for the explosion approached, we all crouched in the bottom of the trenches with our arms over our eyes. We shivered slightly in our field jackets; the desert is cold at six o’clock in the morning. Finally the countdown started —sixty seconds, thirty seconds, twenty, ten, five, four, three, two, one—and then came a flash of unbelievable intensity.

In the brilliant light I saw through my jacket—and through my arm—the pebbles at the bottom of the trench. (For many years I thought this must have been some type of optical illusion. However, I have recently learned that this is a real phenomenon, apparently caused by X rays induced by the explosion.) Contrary to my expectations, the flash lasted for a considerable time, more than a second.

As I was recovering from was recovering from the flash, the temperature changed from morning cold to well above that of the hottest day I could remember.Then, as I was reconciling myself to the blast of heat, the earth suddenly jumped what felt to be about six feet in the air and then fell back and began to tremble violently.

The thought rushed through my mind: They’ve miscalculated and blown up the whole world. After what seemed a very long time, I finally had convinced myself of the world’s probable survival when suddenly a tremendous freight train roared directly over my head. This lasted about a second, and then all was quiet—until a few seconds later, when the train roared back going the other way. Now all was quiet. I lay quivering at the bottom of the trench, the counting of seconds long forgotten, when the announcement came that it was safe to stand up.

By now several minutes had gone by since the initial explosion, and the fireball had spread considerably. Even so, it was a remarkable sight. A thousand colors, shining and mixing and changing and migrating—like tiny, colorful lightning flashes—appearing, disappearing, and appearing again. All of us stood in awe as the cloud expanded, gradually losing its colors and turning into a vast brown-gray balloon. The broad, dirty stem connecting the cloud to the ground slowly dissipated, and the now colorless ball of debris drifted away into the distance. The show was over.

About half an hour after the explosion, we were allowed to walk toward ground zero, stopping about two hundred yards from the actual spot. Along the way we saw an assortment of obliterated military vehicles, weapons, and dummies. The most impressive item was a heavy battle tank that had been split in two by the blast, with the turret blown one way and the main body the other. Contemplating my experiences in the trench, I realized that I was no longer concerned about nuclear weapons. I was now terrified by them.

Later in my military career I took part in many map exercises and maneuvers in which commanders simulated the use of nuclear weapons, often rather casually. I listened to a number of armchair war hawks, as well as some very prim and proper ladies, advocate that we drop a couple of nukes on Hanoi or Baghdad or Pyongyang to show those people we meant business. I feel confident their opinions would have been different if they had been in the trenches at Apple II.

My last assignment in the Army was with the Defense Atomic Test Command in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I was the test-group director for two underground nuclear tests.

After I retired in 1970,1 got a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Texas, and taught there for several years before leaving to start my own business. At present I am in great health and, to the best of my knowledge, I have suffered no ill effects from Apple II or my other work in the field. My wife and I have three healthy, intelligent children and six world-class grandchildren, with probably more to come. A few years ago there was some concern that participants in the Nevada test might have suffered long-term health effects. * That was very interesting! I have been long convinced they are going to use them and they are survivable to some degree. My concern is the degree to which they get tossed about and what will happen to the environment and that the planet will not be sustainable as we need it today. I am convinced they know that! A few years back I had an Indian Politician and Professor send me a link and a story he wrote saying when all is said and done Pakistan and India would unite against the infidel if they attacked and whoever starts a nuclear war will be defeated by the rest of the opposing nuclear powers.

I commend all nuclear nonproliferation efforts but knowing this and knowing every country possessing Nuclear weapons reserves first strike rights and the situations ramping up rapidly with Israel, Pakistan, India, Ira, Russia? China? etc I do not see a nuclear war as being avoidable as too many are willing to use them and are willing to gamble they will live to fight another day. As I keep pointing out, mutual destruction use to be a deterrent but today it seems to be the goal.

* First a quick brush up on my good friend Jerome the Relentless Liberal! The following event sent him on a life time mission of nuclear nonproliferation and his foundations of Donated millions to every Politician of concequence including Obama in an effort to prevent nuclear non proliferation and further his many efforts to further world peace. The American case against the nuclear weapons plans of Iran and North Korea would be greatly strengthened if the United States were to cut drastically its own stockpiles of nuclear weapons, abandon plans to build new nuclear weapons and approve the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

What happens in nuclear war?1. Blast - creates enormous pressure, topples buildings and trees. Kills people by shock wave over pressure and wind, by flying debris, by throwing people against fixed objects and by crushing them in collapsing buildings.2. Fireball - temperatures up to millions of degrees ignite raging fires and kill by flash-burn. People can be burned at great distances. Causes blindness3. Prompt radiation - kills people close to the explosion by large dose. Smaller doses can cause acute delayed radiation sickness and possibly death. Affects future generations genetically.4. Fallout radiation - spreads out to large distances, sometimes killing people hundreds of miles from explosion. Causes leukemia and other forms of cancer everywhere on Earth for decades. Remember Biden said Obama will be tested by international crisis within 6 months? Iran and Israel will guarantee it!

I have been saying for years now that Bush diverted from Afghanistan to attack Iraq and get our military back into the middle east to help Israel with their "Buffer Zone" and the ultimate goal of attacking Iran. Despite on going efforts to find an excuse to attack Iran Three years ago it became obvious that Israel was going to eventually attack Iran and coming to Israel's aid would be the excuse to attack Iran! My big concern has always been that Russia has ordered its special forces in Iran to protect their interests if we attack! That attack is coming closer as Iran and Israel prepare to guarantee that Obama will have his crisis test if Israel does not attack Iran before he is elected?

How timely as we are warned once again Israel is drawing up plans to attack Iran's nuclear facilities and is prepared to launch a strike without backing from the U.S., an Israeli newspaper reported Thursday. Officials in the Israeli Defense Ministry told The Jerusalem Post that while they prefer to act in consultation with the U.S., they are preparing plans that would allow them to act alone. "It is always better to coordinate," a senior Defense Ministry official told the newspaper. "But we are also preparing options that do not include coordination." It would be difficult, but not impossible, to launch a strike against Iran without permission from the U.S., as the American Air Force controls the Iraqi airspace Israel's jets would have to enter on a bombing mission.

Hell it is one way to get the price of oil back up! "There are a wide range of risks one takes when embarking on such an operation," a senior Israeli official told the Post. Iran, the world's fourth-largest crude oil producer, maintains that its uranium enrichment activities are aimed at making fuel for a network of planned electricity-generating nuclear power plants and not for developing weapons. However Israel intelligence sources say Iran has sufficient nuclear material to make an atomic bomb. Last month, amid mounting fears in Israel that the U.S. was doing nothing to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power, Ehud Olmert, Israel's Prime Minister, warned President Bush the last chance of destroying Tehran’s nuclear bomb-making program was passing.

Iran dismisses the possibility of an Israeli strike. "We think that regional and international developments and the complicated situation faced by Israel itself will not allow it to launch military strikes against other countries," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi said, according to the Press TV Web site. "Israel makes threats to promote its psychological and media warfare," Qashqavi said. A report, published in September in Britain's Guardian newspaper, claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert requested a green light to attack Iran in May but was refused by Bush. With that crisis coming to a head what a surprise as The Fox Forum warns we must act fast! Within 6 months? Anyway as most know A week after the UN’s nuclear watchdog released an alarming report on the status of Iran’s nuclear program, Tehran declared that it now has more than 5,000 centrifuges operating and enriching uranium, and that it has launched another rocket into space. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report is based on its most recent inspections in early November. It states that Tehran now has nearly 630 kilograms, or about 1,390 pounds, of low-enriched uranium (LEU). Several highly regarded nuclear experts have concluded that the amount is enough to build a nuclear bomb when converted into high-enriched uranium (HEU). The survival of this unpopular regime depends on its being in a state of perpetual crisis. The Iranian theocracy is incapable of acting as a “normal” state or enacting the kind of behavioral changes the free world demands. Richard L. Garwin, a top nuclear physicist who helped invent the hydrogen bomb, told The New York Times, “They clearly have enough material for a bomb.” Garwin’s assessment was shared by Siegfried S. Hecker, a former director of the Los Alamos weapons laboratory, who told The Times that the size of Tehran’s LEU stockpile “underscored that they are marching down the path to developing the nuclear weapons option.” Thomas B. Cochran of the Natural Resources Defense Council referred to the size of Iran’s stockpile as a “virtual milestone,” maintaining that it was enough for an advanced implosion-type bomb.

Other experts say the ayatollahs’ regime still needs more LEU, but they quickly add that it only takes a few months to produce the required amount. The latest report is all the more alarming because the IAEA’s assessment was based on Iran having around 3,800 centrifuges in operation, not the nearly 5,000 declared on November 26. The report underscores that Tehran is in breach of four UN Security Council resolutions and is defying the international demand that it halt nuclear enrichment and relevant activities. The head of Tehran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Gholamreza Aghazadeh, told reporters that “suspension of nuclear enrichment is not in our vocabulary.” His pronouncement is very much in line with previous statements by the regime’s entire leadership, from Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei down to the regime’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Speaker of Parliament, Ali Larijani. In fact as Aghazadeh was making the announcement about the 5,000 centrifuges, Khamenei was telling another audience that his terrorist regime has now achieved “regional hegemony.”

The November 19 IAEA report states that “There remain a number of outstanding issues regarding the existence of possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear program.” It adds that “Iran has not offered any cooperation with the Agency since that report and has not yet provided the requested information, or access to the requested documentation, locations or individuals.” Equally worrying, the report admits that the IAEA has not been able “to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran.” A comparison of the IAEA’s two most recent reports show that Iran’s nuclear program, controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and intimately supervised by Khamenei, has overcome many technical problems. The ayatollahs’ plan is obvious: produce enough LEU, under the nose of the IAEA and under the pretext of a benign program, and then inject it back into the centrifuge cascades to produce HEU, a weapons-usable material. The report also reflects the utter failure of the diplomatic track set in motion early this year, which was designed to entice the ayatollahs into compliance in exchange for a package of very substantial economic, political, and technological incentives. The failed initiative merely bestowed on the ayatollahs the much needed time to resolve the technical issues, and install more and better centrifuges. We're warned to act fast but?

* We are warned that If the mullahs are not stopped, the free world will soon find itself looking at a nuclear-armed state-sponsor of terror bent on using Iraq as a springboard for its aggressive regional agenda. A growing number of policy makers, including members of Congress from both sides of the aisle, believe that sanctions should be coupled with political pressure. Washington should reach out to Iran’s main democratic opposition, whose blacklisting has only emboldened the real terrorists ruling Iran. With all the talk of Peace while preparing for war in the middle east and around the world how safe do you feel? time to Reset the Doomsday clock?

I woke up this morning very confused waking up to the news and hearing the childish bickering of those running for the Presidency and it reaffirmed to me that these people do not have a clue as to how serious ours and the worlds situation is today. I saw a daily reminder that the Iran issue will not go away and Bush will not allow it to until he finds an excuse to attack them. more stories on violence in Pakistan and the vulnerability of her nuclear weapons. Iran is having her own troubles but Bush insists on instigating world war. Yesterday I noticed a reaffirmation of Russia's willingness to use a nuclear first strike and knowing Bush's insistence on putting the missile shield on Russia's door step to instigate Russia to war you have to be very concerned about that.

Seeing the volatility of the stock market and the way our situation is affecting the entire world, after discussions yesterday as to whether or not a financial collapse would be the trigger for Bush to take control of America by whatever means and really get his plan for new societal, middle east, and world(dis)order going. This is not a secure future Bush has set the stage for! All the conflicting negative chaotic information I saw this morning from around the world made me revisit a story I first wrote two years ago!

Anyway On 1/17/07 the Doomsday Clock was reset to 5 minutes of midnight supposedly because of North Korea’s recent test of a nuclear weapon, Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions, a renewed U.S. emphasis on the military utility of nuclear weapons, the failure to adequately secure nuclear materials, and the continued presence of some 26,000 nuclear weapons in the United States and Russia. Experts assessing the dangers posed to civilization have added climate change to the prospect of nuclear annihilation as the greatest threats to humankind. they are forgetting so much it isn't funny! The Doomsday clock, who controls it and how accurate is it

In light of all this and a lot more let's Discuss the resetting of the Doomsday Clock: Does the world have a clue just how tenuous the situation is? How secure do you feel? As you may know, in 1953 the Doomsday clock had gotten as close as 2 minutes to Midnight because if the nuclear standoff between Russia and the United States. Last April we discussed how fragile peace was around the world and the fact that many Nations were threatening the willingness to prosecute a nuclear first strike and the clock stayed at 7 minutes to Midnight!.

* We have Iran wanting nuclear capabilities, Now they supposedly have them or are at least closer. Depending on who you believe.

* We had a nuclear first strike threat from France that of course still stands.

* Britain left all options on the table when posed the question and of course still does.

* We know Israel had announced the right to a preemptive strike using whatever it takes. We hear they are practicing to take out Iran's nuclear interests with a strategic low level preemptive nuclear strike in which they supposedly will neutralize all Iranian nuclear capabilities. I wouldn't think so but we also know Bush will have the ability to come to their defense when they do, As he has 3 carrier Battle Groups in the Gulf area, 2 Patriot missile batteries to defend Bush's interests, and a Fleet Admiral now in charge in the middle east. What a coincidence? Iran is now totally surrounded, Plus it gets a lot worse.

**India and Pakistan, traditional enemies both possess nuclear weapons and are more of a concern to me because Bush has now decided to share knowledge with India but not Pakistan and they are imploding?!

* Russia and China announced they would use them if they have to! You know they will and with both Nations cooperating militarily and building up along with Russia still supplying Iran with missiles to defend against Bush you have to wonder how that will all end up?

*To me most disconcerting is still knowing Bush will use them preemptively and seems to be setting the stage for an imminent show down that will include what Nations in the end? On top of all this and more we have finally an admission as to our many problems and scientists have decided the Doomsday clock should be moved back only 2 minutes, now to 5 minutes before Midnight. Do you think we are safer than we were during the cold war? To me the cold war only got colder on top of everything else.

Anyway The decision to move the clock forward reflects "growing concerns" about a "second nuclear age." as it damn well should. Plus This change reflects global failures to combat nuclear threats and global warming and as you mat believe or not, we have all been feeling the worsening affects whether they are natural or not. In addressing the threat posed by the use of a nuclear weapon. scientist now realize that it would be civilization-ending at this point in the planets Life Cycle!
Scientists at least, realize that as we stand at the brink of a second nuclear age and at the onset of unprecedented climate change, our way of thinking about the uses and control of technologies must change to prevent unspeakable destruction and future human suffering. I am just afraid that it is too late to think about it all now.

* Whether you believe in Nostradamus or not, he gave us two scenarios at this juncture in life. We had two roads we could follow into the future. We could take the peaceful road down a successful road into the future or we could take the road into conflict that would lead to destruction of man and the planet as we know them. * Sadly man seems to have chosen the 2nd road and with nuclear conflagration staring us in the face: We seem to be leading the way to our demise !

*Knowing the Doomsday clock was first set at 7 minutes before Midnight. Moving as close to 2 minutes before Midnight and being moved back on occasion. With all the threats to use nuclear weapons, with Iran saying they will use them if they have them, and now hearing how close they may be to possessing them even by their own admission and a showdown shaping up in the middle east along with the threats already there to our planet and thus our survival I have to ask. * None of us feel safe, I know. What I want to know is do you think it is time to move the Doomsday clock one minute to Midnight? Where should it be set?

Two days ago I posted a Report stating Iran Would Suffer Up to 20 Million Casualties in Nuclear War With Israel. An estimated 16-20 million Iranians would die in a nuclear war with Israel, according to a report issued by a respected Washington think tank. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) also estimates that between 200,000 and 800,000 Israelis would be killed, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The report, which is theoretical and based on limited verified knowledge of Israel's and Iran's nuclear capability, paints a bleak picture for both nations. It estimates that a nuclear war would last approximately three weeks and ultimately end with the annihilation of Iran, based on Israel's alleged possession of sophisticated and powerful nuclear weapons.The report does not predict the number of deaths due to nuclear fallout. It lists possible targets for an Iranian strike as Tel Aviv and Haifa, while the list of probable targets in Iran includes Tehran and Tabriz.

The report also points to Israel's Arrow missile defense system as an obstacle facing any Iranian strike. Another scenario includes Syria coming to Iran's defense with chemical and biological warheads launched at Israeli targets. Up to 800,000 Israelis would be killed if that were to happen, according to the report. Syria, however, would be forced to grapple with the deaths of approximately 18 million of its citizens if Israel responded with its nuclear arsenal, the Post reported. too rosy scenario

You know from my past stories on the subject that I am hoping nuclear war in the middle east will be avoided because it would at the very least render the middle east and its assets off limits for the rest of the world due to the nuclear fall out! 20 million dead Iranian's and 800,000 dead Israeli's is far too rosy and would be just the tip of the iceberg. No one seems to care about the dire state the planet is already as it becomes increasingly obvious that countries are now willing to chance mutual destruction for God and destruction of perceived enemies. Nuclear war between Israel and Iran whether Iran had the weapons or not would drag in the US (willingly if Bush is in I'm afraid) on the side of Israel and Russia and China rushing to the aid of their ally Iran. Even that sounds too rosy. you know from my past line of stories that Bush need war to further his idea of a one Government world.

* Today with the subject of Israel, Iran, and nuclear war progressing daily I have to note the latest developments! I must admit I was surprised when I first found out there were still Israeli's living in Iran so knowing what is unfolding between Iran and Israel as well as us, Russia, China. and the rest of the world this does not surprise me but warns us that this middle east explosion is getting closer!

Altogether this year about 200 Iranian Jews have arrived in Israel of a total of about 25,000 Jews in Iran. Michael Jankelowitz, spokesman for the quasi-governmental Jewish Agency, which deals with immigration, said more Jews have arrived in Israel from Iran in 2007 than in any other year since the 1978 Islamic revolution there, and the group of 40 was the largest. Meanwhile speaking of Russia's involvement in this unfolding scenario Russia's military on Tuesday successfully test-fired a new intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads -- a weapon intended to replace aging Soviet-era missiles. Existing Topol-M missiles carry a single nuclear warhead and are capable of hitting targets more than 6,000 miles away.

"The RS-24's deployment will strengthen the Strategic Missile Forces' capability to penetrate missile defense systems and strengthen the nuclear deterrent potential of Russia's strategic nuclear forces," the statement said. "The RS-24 will form the backbone of the Strategic Missile Forces and safely ensure the security of Russia and its allies through the mid-century." I first want to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas! I was going to just enjoy the Holiday and not talk about the way things are today but I will do that tomorrow. I saw this report on what would happen if nuclear war breaks out between Iran and Israel. It may sound horrific to some but those of you that know and see the big picture it is a much too rosy Picture First!

Israel is the most hated country in the world today for their war crimes and they are about to magnify the problem 1000 fold. I cannot predict the negative things which will happen as a result of another illegal and immoral war but dropping nuclear weapons on a non-nuclear state which poses no threat to either the US or Israel is going to open Pandora's box as no war crime in history ever tried. One of the results I can guarantee is that the US dollar is going to be destroyed.
It's no great shakes predicting that. Hell, even the Comptroller General of the United States is running around telling as many people as will listen (about 14 in total, I reckon) that the United States is bankrupt. Between a two-trillion-dollar-losing war in Iraq, a balance of payments totally out of control and the Gang of Fools in Washington, you can pretty much kiss the dollar goodbye the day the attack begins. And don't think for a minute I'm talking about strictly the Republican fools in Washington.
By their actions, or better yet, lack of action, the Democrats have proven since the last election thatthey can be just as corrupt and ignorant as the neo-Nazi Republicans. The American people clearly voted against the illegal war in Iraq andagainst the policies of this all too corrupt administration. Guess how thrilled the voters are going to be when they wake up one morning soon to $200 a barrel oil and find out just how much freedom they have left. (Hint, it rhymes with NONE)
Israel knows what their intentions are and it's no accident that they are warning their citizens to stay out or to get out of almost 40 countries immediately. As hated as they are today, Israel and the United States are about to commit the most foolish and self-destructive act of war in history. I have more time in the chow hall in combat than all ofthis administration combined and I can assure you that we are going to lose. It won't take six months as it did with Iraq, we will know almost at once. It wasn't Hitler who paid the greatest price for the war crimes he committed; it was the German people. And today it will be the citizens of Israel and the United States who will pay the ultimate price for what is no more than cold-blooded murder of millions. The butcher's bill willbe paid.--
