Is Russia and China instigating Japan to confront the United States"?
* Japan accuses Russia of intrusion, scrambles jets: Unlike Japan's dispute with China over islands in the East China Sea, which are near potentially vast maritime oil and gas reserves, the feud with Russia has more to do with the legacy of World War II. Soviet soldiers seized the islands at the end of the war and the territorial row has weighed on diplomatic relations ever since, precluding a formal peace treaty.
*Russia, which is currently holding military exercises around the disputed Kurile islands - or Northern Territories - denied any such intrusion took place. The incident happened on what Japan's "Northern Territories Day", when rallies are traditionally held calling for the return of the disputed islands.
China To Find A Target-Rich Environment"and not just Japan": If Chinese warships escalate from locking-on radars to actually pulling the trigger in the East China Sea, they’ll have lots to shoot at – and it won’t be just the Japanese.
With little fanfare, U.S. commanders have been pouring in thousands of new troops, deploying powerful new war machines and ramping up training with allies from across the region. Most of this is due to the “rebalancing” of U.S. forces announced more than a year ago. But the buildup seems to be hitting full-stride just as the standoff between Japan and China reaches a dangerous new low.
