Memo From Baghdad: Familiar Miseries Return : Just last month, a poll showed that for the first time in almost two years, a plurality of Iraqis felt that the country was going in the right direction. Now, that measure of hope, nurtured by a lull in violence that some had begun to believe could last, is being tested by the return of some painfully familiar miseries for Iraq: bloodshed, insufferable heat and political struggle.

Over the past week, more than 150 Iraqis have been killed, and hundreds more have been wounded, in an escalation of sectarian violence that included the country’s deadliest day in nearly two years. At the same time, temperatures have soared to 120 degrees, while intense sandstorms have kept Iraqis from sleeping on their roofs — a critical escape from the heat at a time when electricity to power air-conditioners is working for only a couple of hours a day because of the strains to Iraq’s power grid. The government, meanwhile, remains paralyzed as Sunni and Kurdish...

Millions of people have been forced to rely on insufficient supplies of poor-quality water as water and sewage systems suffer from a lack of maintenance and a shortage of engineers." "Nothing has changed people but we are leaving them to their own demise and it will spread through the entire middle east."
Both Amnesty and the Red Cross slam the Iraqi government for failing to grapple with the critical needs of their populations.

The two reports cited a litany of concerns that will not be corrected, including severe widespread poverty, a lack of food and water, and broken families left to scrounge for whatever they can find to get by. Both reports described a situation that shows no sign of clear improvement. Many women "have been forced to wear Islamic dress or targeted for abduction, rape or killing. The Congressional investigation into reconstruction in Iraq found that six out of eight projects the Bush administration claimed to be a success were falling apart, throwing doubts over the long-term viability of much of the $30 billion program. I have to tell you, the entire program, the surge, Democracy, everything, was guaranteed lost from the get go. What ever is built will be destroyed.

The report looked at hospital projects that at last count their was one capable of operating at all and that great success. Each sect is only concerned with looking out for their own interest and future and as we are told to ignore everyday because it is not "the reality on the ground" reality is much worse! The inspectors found serious plumbing and electrical failures due to looting, equipment lying idle to me primarily because people are scared to death to venture out into the reality Bush has created for them. The string of attacks, say sources have now claimed the lives of at least 39 people, the deadliest in the holy city of Kerbala where at least 13 were killed.

Sixteen car and roadside bombs have exploded across the country, one in Mahmudiya in the south killed three people. The blasts come despite heightened security ahead of next weeks Arab League summit in Baghdad. Officials said about 100,000 troops have been deployed to safeguard the politicians.

Over 40 dead, 200 wounded in Iraq attacks: The deadliest attack Tuesday occurred in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, 80 kilometers south of Baghdad, where the explosion of two car bombs in an area full of shops and restaurants has killed at least 13 people and left 50 injured, according to a provincial councilor, Hussein al-Aboudi Shadhan. Thousands of Shiite pilgrims from around the world gather each day at Karbala around the tomb of Imam Hussein, grand-son of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad. Five Iraqi pilgrims were among those killed Tuesday.

The insurgents also blew up the house of a senior police officer in Fallujah, in the west of the country. In Kirkuk, at least 13 died, mostly policemen, and 59 wounded, in another attack. Car bombs and improvised explosives destroyed schools, markets and apartments. An ambulance packed with explosives incinerated a government office. At least 63 people were killed and 185 wounded. 14 bombings in all targeting both sects!

Anti Shiite Kurds refuse to turn over the Sunni leader: Al-Hashemi has taken refuge in the Kurdish region, which is part of Iraq but has its own security forces. The Iraqi army and national police do not operate there. As long as the Kurdish officials allow him to stay there, he is effectively immune from prosecution in Baghdad.

The Kurds, who have been trying to work out a solution to the crisis, are also wary of al-Maliki's perceived authoritarian streak. US Troops to Return to Iraq: Big mistake! Here we come "Custer's last stand"

US Troops to Return to Iraq: U.S. and Iraqi leaders signaled Wednesday that the two governments are working toward an agreement to return some American forces to Iraq after completion of next month's troop withdrawal to help train Iraqi units and maintain security gains.Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said there is "no doubt the U.S. forces have a role in providing training of Iraqi forces." Vice President Joe Biden, who arrived in Baghdad on Tuesday night to meet with Iraqi leaders and salute American troops as the war winds to a formal close, said the U.S. will provide security assistance to the Iraqis at Baghdad's request.

Messrs. Biden and Maliki said U.S. and Iraqi officials agreed to form a committee to address defense and security cooperation between the two countries. Those issues have been the main point of contention between Washington and Baghdad as the year-end deadline for U.S. troop withdrawal neared. Mr. Biden told Iraqi leaders that while the post-war phase of U.S.-Iraqi relations will hopefully be defined by typical diplomatic and economic exchanges, "that partnership includes a robust security relationship based on what you decide—what you decide—you think that relationship should be." Big mistake!

What about the Kurds who want their autonomy and they do not want to share their oil fields period. Nuri Al-Maliki wants that issue resolved and it will never be. The entire middle east and north Africa and our more than century of interference and exploitation can take the blame for that too.

Bush has created a hell on earth for Iraq that he still calls liberty and success with promises to spread it throughout the entire Middle East Sunni against Shiite. Bush had long wanted a Korea style force in Iraq to secure the peace! That will never work in Iraq or the Middle East! Planting our military in the middle of the mess Bush has created out of the Middle East because of his failed Democratization program is going to be a Custer's Last Stand on a grand scale if we are still there when this breaks open! Looking at the war cabinet Obama has amassed I am going to say at this point that this is going to happen even under a President Obama. What are we frigging stupid?

Iraq's fiery anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr will "escalate military resistance" and unleash his Mehdi Army militia if U.S. troops fail to leave Iraq as scheduled this year. These are not Idle threats! What are we frigging stupid or just asking for it?

If we don't leave Iraq in 2011 it will be Custer's last stand on a grand scale period: I hate to say it but that appears to be our goal, perpetual war wherever we can find it.
