Freeganism and survivalism

I have to one degree or another been a Freegan and a survivalist my entire life Following is a Breakdown on Freeganism get some ideas!

First published 5 years ago: Times are getting tougher and I want you to learn how to be frugal and survive when most will not just in case.Following is a Breakdown on Freeganism get some ideas!

Freeganism is an anti-consumerist lifestyle whereby people employ alternative living strategies based on "limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources. The website freegan.info states that freegans embrace community, generosity, social concern, freedom, cooperation, and sharing in opposition to a society based on materialism, moral apathy, competition, conformity, and greed." The lifestyle involves salvaging discarded, unspoiled food from supermarket dumpsters that have passed their display date but haven't passed their edible date. They salvage the food not because they are poor or homeless, but as a political statement. It isn't just food it is everything. Watch for discards do not be proud be safe!

The word "freegan" is a portmanteau "free" and "vegan" Freeganism started in the mid 1990s, out of the antiglobalization and environmentalist movements. Groups such as Food Not Bombs served free vegetarian and vegan food that was salvaged from food market trash by dumpster diving. The movement also has elements of Diggers, an anarchist street theater group based in Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco in the 1960s, that gave away rescued food.

Many freegans get free food by pulling it out of the trash, a practice commonly nicknamed dumpster diving in North America and skipping or bin diving in the UK, as well as bin raiding. Freegans find food in the garbage of restaurants, grocery stores, and other food related industries, which they claim allows them to avoid spending money on products that exploit the world's resources, contribute to urban sprawl, treat workers unfairly, or disregard animal rights. By foraging, they believe they are keeping perfectly edible food from adding to landfill clutter and that can feed people and animals who might otherwise go hungry.

Wild foraging and urban gardens: Instead of buying industrially grown foods, wild foragers find and harvest food and medicinal plants growing in their own communities. Some freegans participate in "Guerrilla" or "Community" Gardens, with the stated aim of rebuilding community and reclaiming the capacity to grow one's own food. In order to fertilize those guerrilla gardens, food obtained from dumpster diving is sometimes also reused. In many urban guerrilla gardens, vermiculture is used instead of ordinary composting techniques in order to keep the required infrastructure/room small. Guerrilla gardeners claim to seek an alternative to dependence and participation in what they perceive as an exploitative and ecologically destructive system of global, industrialized corporate food production. It isn't just food it is everything Learn how to make do, adapt, overcome!

Sharing

Sharing is also a common freegan practice. Food Not Bombs recovers food that would otherwise go to waste to serve warm meals on the street to anyone who wants them. The group promotes an ethic of sharing and community, while working to show what they consider to be the injustice of a society in which they claim fighting wars is considered a higher priority than feeding the hungry. Really, Really Free Markets are free social events in which freegans can share goods instead of discarding them, share skills, give presents and eat food. A free store is a temporary market where people exchange goods and services outside of a money-based economy.

Freegans also advocate sharing travel resources. Internet-based ride sharing reduces but does not eliminate use of cars and all the related resources needed to maintain and operate them. Community Bike Programs and Bike Collectives facilitate community sharing of bicycles, restore found and broken bikes, and teach people how to do their own bike repairs. In the process they build a culture of skill and resource sharing, reuse wasted bikes and bike parts, and create greater access to environmentally friendly transportation.
 Freeganism

I must admit I have been receiving some very surprising info from a 65 year old friend who is a millionaire and was one of those who moved to California in the 60s. Anyway he sent me the article on Freegans meaning?

I have to one degree or another been a Freegan and a survivalist my entire life, not dumpster picking but anything else is fair game and I will do whatever I have to in order to come out on top and my friends you better be prepared too. I originally lived at an Aggie and was the student Farm manager. I butchered animals on Holidays for extra money. I traveled around the county teaching citizens various aspects of taking care of their livestock etc.

I lived at, worked or managed every kind of farm you can imagine. I always raised my own veggies and fruit. I can do everything! Survival and living off the land are lifelong lessons of mine. When I got out of the service some friends from California wanted me to go to California and start a commune but I didn't.

10 Year Energy Plans from Gore,T Boone Pickens, and Richard Branson:

10 Year Energy Plans from Gore,T Boone Pickens, and Richard Branson: I am glad someone is stepping up but have to wonder where will we be in 10 Years? Well! That was 3 years ago and now we know part of the answer becauase of inaction. Why have we not heard of these plans? Why has nothing been done? Where will we be in 7 more years?

In a nutshell while our Political idiots continue to nothing as they all accuse the other side of failure while once again refusing to come together and do the right thing for the Nation and the world. I am glad to see such influential people step up and try to resolve ours and the worlds energy needs while we still stand a chance at a future.

Three influential people have stepped forward "and 3 years ago" with money and plans that at least give us a little hope, something we all drastically need today. Richard Branson was first almost 5 years ago when amongst other things we heard this! Commenting on an announcement by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group of a 10-year, three billion dollar commitment to renewable energy initiatives, Friends of the Earth's head of campaigns, Mike Childs, said:

"As one of the top business leaders it's welcome that Richard Branson has recognized the urgent need to tackle climate change. Whilst his investment in bio-fuels is welcome, this can only be a small part of the solution, and must not distract from the need to cut emissions. Bio fuels can provide a greener alternative to oil based fuels, but this is only true if they are produced sustainably and don't interfere with food production and biodiversity protection. Richard Branson's train business will be an important part of the future, encouraging people to take the train instead of flying, but the fast growth in air flights can not be maintained without causing climatic disaster. Just one of Branson's proposals

Finally someone from our Nation that can help has also stepped forward with a doable 10 year plan! Al Gore: Al Gore is challenging the United States to produce all of its electricity through wind power, solar power and other environmentally friendly sources within 10 years. Gore said the transition would not only help resolve America's current energy and economic problems, but would also improve U.S. national security by reducing dependence on foreign oil. VOA Correspondent Cindy Saine reports from Washington. Al Gore received a rock star welcome at an energy conference in Washington, where he issued a challenge to the country.

"So today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean, carbon-free sources within 10 years," he said. Called an alarmist by some critics, Gore has made global climate change his signature issue, and his efforts won him a Nobel Prize. He admitted that weaning Americans off fossil fuels would require placing a carbon tax on burning oil and coal, which his plan would offset with a reduction in payroll taxes. But Gore said soaring gasoline prices and the current economic turmoil have created a new political environment where Americans are hungry for change.

"I do not remember a time in our country when so many things seem to be going so wrong simultaneously," he said. "Our economy is in terrible shape and getting worse, people are hurting. Gasoline prices are increasing dramatically and so are electricity rates. Jobs are being outsourced, home mortgages are in trouble. Banks, automobile companies, other institutions we depend upon are under growing pressure."

Gore called on all Americans to pull together, citing the kind of national effort that made it possible for Neil Armstrong to walk on the moon just eight years after former President John F. Kennedy issued that challenge. He said both presidential candidates, his fellow Democrat Barack Obama and the presumptive Republican nominee John McCain are way ahead of most politicians in the fight against global climate change. But Gore did criticize President Bush's proposal to resume offshore oil drilling as a way to address the current energy crisis. "It is only a truly dysfunctional system that would buy into the perverse logic that the short-term answer to high gasoline prices is drilling for oil 10 years from now in areas that should be protected," he said. Amen Al Gore

In response to this T Boone Pickens responded to Al Gore's Generational Challenge to Repower America speech, saying he and the former vice president "have two different objectives and our plans should be viewed with that in mind." Last week, the billionaire discussed the Pickens plan he hopes will reduce foreign oil imports by more than 30% in the next 5 to 10 years. In a release issued through BP Capital, Pickens said Gore "put forward a framework of a plan that is focused on global warming and climate issues. My plan is aimed squarely at breaking the stranglehold that foreign oil has on our country and the $700 billion annual impact it has on our economy. ... Vice President Gore's plan does not address this enormous problem.

In a speech at a Washington energy conference, Gore called for the U.S. to produce all of its electricity from renewable energy and carbon-free sources within 10 years. Pickens unveiled a plan that involves using wind to supplant natural gas, which could then be used towards transportation. "It's time for us to take responsibility for the problem we've created and act now," Pickens said. "The Federal Government should provide the leadership to clear the way for action and private enterprise should build the infrastructure to get it done. Only in that way can we recapture our energy destiny. Pickens Says He And Gore Have Different Objectives

* We all know how one sided my way or nothing Partisan bickering resulting in absolutely nothing getting done is destroying us and the world. It is a breath of fresh air to see 3 distinguished fellows step forward with money and positive ideas. That they differ is a plus as we see from Politics there is no one idea but a melding of many will get us out of this. I am afraid we still have to hope our Governments will realize this and cooperate with "we the people" If we are to be saved it will come from us!

BP calls for cautious move into arctic: BP?

Oil companies need to address local, national and global concerns before moving ahead with offshore arctic development, a BP official said in Norway. Warmer average global temperatures are melting arctic sea ice and glaciers, exposing vast areas that could hold oil and natural gas reserves.

Daly said there is a notable dilemma, however, as environmental voices grow louder while energy demand increases. "This will require a level of openness and transparency that our industry has not achieved so far," he said. "It will challenge beliefs around information and transparency to the very core of our companies."
Our BP is saying this?

BP is moving forward drilling in the Arctic with a Russian company "disastrous" plus Shell working on US okay. Carefully? That Russian company has a worse record than BP if you can believe that. Chevron isn't much better. The only way to proceed safely is to "stay out"

BP is still going to be drilling in the Arctic but now with a Russian company with a more disastrous record plus Shell is also still going forward. What a frigging nightmare! Read the story at the link and Shell is filling us with the same crap that BP did. They can handle it, it's safe, my rear!

“Although Greenland last year refused drilling concessions to BP because it lacked rigorous enough safety protocols, BP appears to have found a more willing back door to the pristine Arctic environment via the Russian firm Rosneft,” said Ivan Blokov, Campaign Director, Greenpeace Russia."Given that in 2009 alone, Rosneft had 12,000 pipeline breaks, 7526 of which resulted in oil leaks, it would be an understatement to say we are concerned about these two companies operating together in Arctic.” This is scary stuff! Man this is still too close to home and a disaster in the making. They are destroying our frigging world at an ever increasing rate.

Remember when the still "ongoing" Mexico Gulf disaster was going on? Look what they were going to do for us. A Russian company doing this scares the hell out of me. The U.S. Government confirmed the drilling “pause” does not apply to BP’s new project, called Liberty. BP is going to build a small 5 acre island and drill down 2 miles before drilling 6 to 8 miles sideways in another never before done scheme? No way, come on! This boondoggle is still scheduled to go ahead despite their terrible record of so called accidents and disregard for following common sense? despite that blow out valves fail 40% of the time?"

.On May 25, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) August 2011 decision to permit Shell to drill in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas off Alaska’s north shore.

“The deep-water moratorium we had in place did not apply to this particular project, which would have been based from a man-made island and would have potentially been drilling directionally into formations under shallow water. If drilling permit applications were submitted for the project, the Department of the Interior would have reviewed them at the appropriate time and determine, based on safety and other considerations, whether the project should move forward with drilling under federal waters,” said Kendra Barkoff, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of the Interior. What the hell is wrong with us to even to think of this? Our desperation is grotesquely misplaced!

So they’re really going to even consider a project as complicated as this one involving a drill down two miles, then turn and bore another six to eight miles more to get to oil on Federally owned land. BP? They can not be stupid enough to trust them in the country let alone drilling more precariously than the disaster they just created. Proceed safely? Think of the environment first?

Someone better hit the stop button! Remember Bush and Cheney's secret White House meetings with the so called energy czars? Remember, the rest of the world by law must use an acoustic valve in case of emergency that would have prevented this. Since oil ran this country Bush and Cheney decided at 1/2 million per valve it was too expensive for oil companies as profit and cutting corners was their only goal not the people and the environment. All inspections of drilling and platforms stopped in 2001. Obama's mistake was not re instituting them instantly but he better do it before he lets those idiots drill in the Arctic.

Remember where life began! We have allowed BP to unleash a volcano of death in the bottom of our chain of life killing life in the ocean that gave life to us. We can not let them add the Arctic to their list of nightmares. Our planet is shrinking. The planet is one life system and everything is interconnected, everything affected by everything else eventually. As I taught my kids, the ocean is like a giant washing machine. What goes around eventually comes around. Why can't people ever look at the big picture, see the big picture, or think of the repercussions of their actions before they act? Engage brain before moving!

BP has done absolutely nothing right period from the get go or the disaster in the Gulf never would have happened. They obviously have never used the necessary technology to deal with this disaster they just got the equipment so they could use the lie that they were prepared. Nothing has gone right! Minimizing the ecological damage and helping the people whose lives they have destroyed they could care less about. Minimizing their financial liability and staying in control of their disaster is all that matters. We can not let them ply their destruction in the Arctic too!

Now unbeknownst to me we plan on allowing Chevron to drill in the Arctic too. We know what happened in the Gulf of Mexico and we see the still unfolding nightmare from the disaster in the North sea with oil and deadly gas thrown in. Why do we seem to be racing to destroy the planet. It can only take so much and we have made a horrible mess to date. Why not hydrogen and or natural gas as a major energy replacement? We have to stop this if it is not too lat already!

Canada pulls out of Kyoto protocol, denounces Kyoto: Tell me why sung by Declan Galbreath & Severn Suzuki's 1992 Speech at the Earth Summit / Amazing

Canada pulls out of, denounces Kyoto: The protocol, initially adopted in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997, is aimed at fighting global warming. Canada's previous Liberal government signed the accord but did little to implement it and Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government never embraced it.

"The Kyoto Protocol does not cover the world's largest two emitters, United States and China, and therefore cannot work," Kent said. "It's now clear that Kyoto is not the path forward to a global solution to climate change. If anything it's an impediment."

A deal to rescue the climate is absolutely necessary and critical but totally worthless without the worlds 3 biggest offenders China, India, and the United States on board and leading the way to save man and the planet not destroy it for their gain.I am sorry to say it but I respect Canada and not just for this action. Hopefully this will be the wake up call we need.

Remember the Little girl who silenced the UN Environmental Conference? Stunning!

I was quite impressed and watched it numerous times over the years myself. I wish to God this little girl and the reality of our situation mattered but it does not. We must continue to try and make a difference though! Severn Suzuki's 1992 Speech at the Earth Summit / Amazing but ignored. How can we with any conscience just continue this?

Severn is 30 now, Severn Cullis-Suzuki is one of the world's most remarkable youth activists. Born and raised in Vancouver, Severn has been working on in environmental and social justice issues since kindergarten. At age 9, she and some friends started the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a small group of children committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues. They traveled to 1992's Rio Earth Summit, where 12 year-old Severn gave a powerful speech that deeply affected the leaders who heard it. Watch the video. she was mesmerizing and 18 years later look where we are, look what we have done!

We have learned nothing and we are in serious danger because we have put the corporations in control of our Government and our environment. I am afraid it is too late but If we have not already screwed ourselves we better replace this corporatocracy with Democracy! We are screwed primarily because of Bush and Cheney's deregulation. The entire world should be concerned about this because it is going to screw the world. Frigging American corporatocracy! Capitalism run amok!

Would a Democracy allow their fellow citizens to go without the basic needs of any human being let alone right here in the USA, Food Shelter and clothing? Homes are still being foreclosed at a rate of 1 every 7.5 seconds. This is a Democracy in action? Is the health insurance Industry spending 1.5 million dollars a day to control Congress and kill health care reform so they can keep control over you Democracy in action? Would a democracy destroy the environment, the very world we need for survival?

No! It is capitalism run amok, Capitalism is controlling our Democracy, controlling our destiny. This is not a Democracy. Democracy is a system of government in which either the actual governing is carried out by the people governed or the power to do so is granted by them. There are two principles that any definition of democracy includes, equality and freedom. Would not equality dictate that the top 1% take care of those who are in trouble? Or is it because Capitalism rules Democracy that they have the "freedom" to ignore Equality and Democracy?

We are in serious trouble people and from what I can see it will only get worse. We have got to get out there, we have got to be heard, we have got to make a difference.
