Some Islamist Groups Unify to Try to Topple Syrian Regime: The new group called the Islamic Front are conservative Muslims and profess a goal of establishing an Islamic state in Syria once their rebellion is successful. Al Qaeda groups aren't members of the new alliance, but the al-Nursa Front, an al Qaeda-affiliated group made up of mostly Syrian fighters, is an ally of the founding members.
The Islamist Front described their announcement as a gradual but total merger of the factions aimed at strengthening their prowess on the ground, according to rebels from some of the factions in the new alliance, rebels outside of the alliance and military analysts.
