 Somali ex-pirates seek employment: MOGADISHU: Mohamed Abdi Hassan, one of Somalia’s most notorious pirate chiefs, appears far more businessman than sea bandit, as he explains why he now wants to end the murderous hijacking of ships.

  “We are convincing the youths to give up piracy... I have influence, and have been mobilising the community... “I’m not saying I was not involved, for I was the one who initiated the fight,” he said, claiming he took up piracy after his fishing company was ruined by foreign fleets off Somalia after the country spiraled into civil war in 1991.

It was not foreign fleets it was us! Anyway I am not going to talk about the amount of piracy but the reason our pirates "yes we killed their livelihood necessitating Piracy. I knew the fishing industry died however I did not know we killed it by dumping nuclear and other industrial waste there. Brother pointed out that Somali war lords were bought off to dump hazardous waste in their waters. A Swiss firm called Achair Partners, and an Italian waste company called Progresso, made a deal with Ali Mahdi, that they could dump containers of waste material in Somali waters. These European companies were said to be paying Warlords about $3 a ton, where as to properly dispose of waste in Europe costs about $1000 a ton. Why we don't condemn our Somali pirates

I heard the fish were dead there and the fishermen took to pirating but it figures someone has been dumping nuclear and other toxic waste there. I do not blame them for pirating but stealing stuff is one thing. Ransoming for millions and disrupting the world is another but we disrupted them. They are supporting whole villages. I don't know what the answer is. They even take ships that are feeding their people. What do you do avoid the area and let them starve? I don't know!

It really bothers me that it seems whenever I delve into something it is always capitalism behind the problem. We keep hearing the virtues of Capitalism but our own problems and I am seeing around the world are caused by Capitalism run Amok. The great system of Capitalism is destroying our world. We have got to rein it in and control it. I was concerned with Bush's warmongering and the world marshaling forces to take him on. I was concerned about Israel instigating war too thinking they were the world’s primary problem. I thought they were controlling the US and we were going to end up destroying the world at their bid.

I noticed behind every frigging conflict including Gaza and Georgia and Afghanistan was oil and other energy sources so I just took the normal course of blaming all our problems on oil and other energy sources as the world postured to move into the future. Japan dumps radioactive water in sea Thousands of tons because they don't know what else to do with it saying the ocean will dilute it. Damn it!
We just discussed the incalculable cost of nuclear power and what Japan has done to us and the ocean We are killing our life source "the ocean"

I was blown away that Chernobyl is now a vacation destination knowing how much they are still hiding and that 25 years later the Germans pay hunters half a million apiece for wild boars to keep them off the table as they are still radioactive. This is 4 reactors and will dwarf Chernobyl and now they are purposely poisoning our ocean even more! Radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is still poisoning Germany's boars nearly 25 years on, with authorities fighting to keep toxic meat off the market as the wild boar population rockets.

To add insult to injury BP is paying their management extra large bonuses this year because of their great safety record and they want to resume drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. BP seeks to resume Gulf drilling You know the awful truth about the generations long damage they have done to the Gulf and there is no way they should be allowed to make it even worse.

The people in the Gulf might as well keep drilling for oil because their fishing is going to be dead for generations if we are around that long. This is of epic and Biblical proportions. This is life changing, this is planetary changing. Oil swallow, Jean Michal Cousteau, all the special clean up methods aside will be worthless as Billions of gallons of oil and 2 million gallons of deadly dispersant make the trip around the Gulf stream and not only destroy the gulf but diluted or not alter the entire food chain around much of the world.

Their lives are altered forever and they know it! I feel sorry for the likes of my son whose health is sacrificed in wars but him and all our military in the gulf where we have a heavy multi branch presence will be kept there and their long term health mental and physical will be sacrificed. The people who live there along with military families should look at moving elsewhere. They have resumed swimming there and they will pay with their health! Finally, ignored but true: Gulf spill's effects 'may not be seen for a decade'

You know we have long discussed the oceans large dead spots, continent size garbage swirls, and growing hypoxia

We are killing our oceans faster than ever not to speak of the continent size garbage swirls all around the world. We have to stop this mentality we are illustrating again towards the sea saying we are okay if the radiation blows out to sea it won't affect anyone. It will at some point affect everyone. What's new as Trafigura fined €1m for illegally exporting hazardous waste to Africa, remember our Somali pirates?

It is about time as London based oil-trading company Trafigura was ordered to pay a fine of 1 million Euros ($1.3 million) for illegally dumping chemical waste in the Ivory Coast in 2006.You may remember the United Nations says the dumping killed 15 people and sickened about 100,000 others.The fine was issued by a Dutch court because the ship carrying the waste belonging to Trafigura departed from the Port of Amsterdam otherwise they would have continued to get away with it.

Trafigura lied about what they were dumping and had wrongly described the waste as routine slops from ordinary tank-cleaning. Residents complained about the foul smell, and 30,000 Africans were made ill when the toxic waste was dumped and who needed medical treatment. the export of waste and toxic waste dumping to the third world and harming the environment has been regulated as this has been going on for years.

A multimillion-dollar settlement was reached in September last year between Trafigura and the law firm representing people who claimed they had become sick from the toxic waste. Of course despite the settlement, Trafigura denies any responsibility for the actions of the contractor that dumped the waste. No one is responsible, what's new?
