We know that we basically installed the Taliban as the governing group after Russia left. What China did during that post period is the question. If they maintained any relation with what is now Al Qaeda then they shouldn't have to worry about defending a rail line. Their only worry would be against any local splinter group in Afghanistan of which there are many.<br />And here's a thought. Seeing as how we'll have to eventually negotiate with the Taliban (or the groups that make them up) it may work out to where the Chinese use the Taliban to protect the rail line.
